As fall sports have recently drawn to a close, the Sun Sentinel, which awards a select number of students a spot on All-County teams across various sports from class 5A-1A and 7A-6A, awarded a total of 22 Patriots a variety of end-of-season titles. The winners are as follows:

Varsity Boys Swimming All-County

Benjamin Gomez del Campo

Joseph Lee

“Earning this honor means a lot to me especially after such a tough year,” Lee said. “There were many concerns about the season getting cancelled and I am beyond grateful that I was able to swim one last time with my best friends. I worked really hard for months during and after quarantine and I’m really happy that it showed with this award.”

Kirill Prikhodko

Daniel Watson

“It’s a reaffirmation that all my hard work paid off,” Watson said. “Waking up before the world to grind harder than the next guy was not easy but to me it was easier than being complacent and being content with exactly where I was. I finished my career exactly how I could have dreamed it and now I’m onto bigger and better things.”

Broward 5A-1A Football Co-Coach of the Year: Pat Surtain

“It means that we had a really good team,” Coach Surtain said on what the honor meant to him, “and I’m a firm believer that you are only as good as the people you surround yourself with and I have a pretty good staff.”

Girls Volleyball All-County First Team

Juliana Holifield

“Making first team all-county means a lot to me,” Holifield said. “I’m grateful that other coaches recognize the hard work I have put in this year. I, along with the rest of my team, have faced many challenges this season and I appreciate their support through it all. After receiving this award, I feel more encouraged than ever to continue to train and prepare to play volleyball in college.”

Yakira Wardlaw

“I feel honored to have been chosen as an All County selection,” Wardlaw said. “It makes me realize that all of the hard work and sacrifices is being recognized. It feels even better to have received it during my senior year. I’m just thankful to the school, my coaches, my teammates and family for supporting me and giving me the opportunity to showcase my talents.”

Cross Country All-County

Ashley Fitzgerald

“Making the all-county team this year means a lot to me,” Fitzgerald said. “This year was tough because of COVID-19, it affected our practices and competitions. I am happy that the hard work paid off this season. This honor is also a testament to Cross Country Coach Damion Sutton. I am now excited for this year’s track season to begin.”

“Earning this honor means so much to me and I am overjoyed that I was able to make the all-county,” Marx said. “This really showed me that the work I put in really paid off. Last season I didn’t play as well as I hoped to, but over the offseason, I worked really hard on my weaknesses and improved my overall game.”

Broward girls golfer of the year

“Winning the Sun-Sentinel girls golf player of the year means so much to me,” Shanahan said. “I’m glad my hard work has paid off and I can continue the legacy of my former teammates, who have won the title in years past.”
