Band classes trumpet success at concert

in Features by

When drum major Glenn Medina joined band during his freshman year, he could have never imagined performing at his last band concert. When he played May 11 with the rest of the students, he was overcome by emotion, characterizing the concert.

The theater was packed Wednesday night as parents and friends watched both Lower School and High School students perform.

The Beginning Band class kicked off the concert with traditional songs such as “When the Saints Go Marching In” and classics such as Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” Concert Band, the Junior High Drumline, the Percussion Ensemble, the Lab Jazz Band and the Concert Jazz Band groups followed.

The highlight of the concert came during the wind ensemble’s performance of “Solas Ane.” The piece featured seniors Medina and Alex Lombo, who both played solos. Junior flutist Gianna Sanchez especially enjoyed the piece. “My favorite part of the concert was playing Solas Ane. It really honored the seniors, and the song is just beautiful,” she said.

At the end of the concert, band directors Kimberly Imerbsin and Isabelle Antoine presented the Director’s Award to Luis Cortez for junior high and Jacob Tanchak for senior high. Medina was also honored with the John Phillip Sousa Award, a national award presented to outstanding band students each year.

With numerous groups performing jazz and classical music beautifully, the band concert was an outstanding success this year.
