Black gold and green makes bricks into books

in News by

Whether encouraging students to recycle or cleaning up our local beaches, the Black, Gold and Green club has one priority: educating students on the plight our planet faces. The club completed its most recent project, the construction of a brick library in the Environmental Education Center (EEC), Feb. 12.

Club members painted leftover brick pavers from the construction of the EEC to imitate classic literature novels and children’s books with eco-friendly titles, such as “The Jungle Book” and “Tarzan”.

“[This project] will help bring excitement to the elementary school kids by placing together reading and the environment,” club sponsor Mrs. Jennifer Page said. “It may also spark an interest in reading and the environment [the children] have yet to discover.”

The project had been under discussion since January, when members chose book titles and designs. The club holds true to its mission of helping our planet by reusing old bricks rather than buying new ones.

“I thinks it’s exciting to see the upper school students coming together to plan a project that will benefit lower school students as well,” Mrs. Page said.

However, club plans do not stop here. Members will continue their annual earth day celebration with lower school students, where they set up different stations to teach children about earth. Additionally, the club will host an art competition at the end of third quarter that will encompass all art forms, ranging from painting to poetry, which surround the theme of nature.
