With a win in their respective tournaments earlier this week, the varsity boys and girls golf teams claimed the regional championship and will move on to the state tournament.

The boys team won regionals in the 2A Region 4 Golf Tournament this past Monday at The Savannah’s Golf Club in Merritt Island, Par 72. They clinched the win after carding a final team score of 284. Medalist and tournament champion sophomore Luke Clanton finished at the top of the pack, posting a 68. Senior Jude Kim and senior Leo Herrera each recorded a 71 to tie for third, junior Jonathan Mourin finished in a tie for sixth place with a 74 and sophomore Gabriel Hegerstrom came in a tie for fifteenth place with 78.

“Our team is insane this year, and we are playing very well,” Clanton said. “The team chemistry is amazing; I feel like we are a family, and we always push each other to get better. I feel like at states if we all play our games we can win.”

The girls golf team also took home the regional title at Grand Palms in Pembroke Pines this past Tuesday after shooting a final team score of 308 to finish in first and qualify for the state tournament. Sophomore Kelly Shanahan tied for third place while eighth graders Katherine Schaefer and Alessandra Tabora each finished in fifth place to seal the win.

“We lost our top three starting players this year, which had a huge impact on our team,” Schaefer said, “but we never lost confidence in each other. By working together, we were able to accomplish most of our goals for this season, much like winning districts and regionals. Our team has made it so far, and I believe that if we keep our heads down, focus, and do what we do best, we have a shot at winning states for the third year in a row.”

Both teams will advance to their state tournaments scheduled for Nov. 4 to try and bring another title back to Plantation.
