Heritage Reels in New English Teacher

Reminiscing about eating breakfast at Lil’ Dizzy’s on her way to work at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Ashley Hendricks, the newest member to the Heritage team, explained her favorite memories of living in the city. Hendricks chose to leave New Orleans and return to Florida when her father passed away, a decision which she does not regret.

Having a passion for film and a background in musical theater, Hendricks received her masters in Film from Florida Atlantic University after majoring in English. “Film takes the visual and literary aspects and makes it exciting and new,” said Hendricks.  She has completed documentary work and published a few short stories for editor friends as well as writing fan fiction.

Hendricks previously taught at Cypress Bay High School, Isidore Newman School and Georgia State University, starting her career as a teacher back in 2008. She was drawn to Heritage because her sister graduated Heritage class of 2013. Hendricks recently joined the team as an English I and III Honors teacher at the beginning of the second semester.

This film fanatic also enjoys traveling, with her adventures taking her to tour Europe, the United States, and return home to Hawaii, where her 21 first cousins live. Hendricks constantly finds herself grasping at the last seconds of the day, wishing it was a few hours longer. “I don’t want to miss the opportunity of taking on something new,” said Hendricks. “I just ask myself, ‘Where does it fit in?’”

Hendricks goes home to four-year-old twins who are her pride and joy. She enjoys photographing old landscapes and capturing the aftermath of environmental disasters. Hendricks is currently writing her dissertation on places that have been through tragedies and titled her thesis, “City of Ruins.”
