in Features/Football/Sports by

It didn’t take long for the Patriots to hire a new head football coach, as former defensive coordinator Patrick Surtain was announced as the new head coach, just four days after former head coach Mike Rumph announced his move back to the University of Miami.

For the past three seasons, Surtain was the defensive coordinator for the Patriots, helping to lead them to back-to-back state championships in 2013 and 2014. Before he was a coach, Surtain had an illustrious 11-year career in the NFL, playing cornerback for the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs.

The School notified the team of the new hire Friday morning, and the immediate reactions were all positive. Just after Athletic Director Karen Stearns made the announcement to the team, players quickly jumped up to hug and congratulate the former defensive coordinator.

This makes three consecutive head coaches that have had NFL experience. This quality can be very helpful for a football coach, as it warrants respect from the players and helps the coach make in-game decisions based on situations he has experienced on the game’s biggest stage.

Not only does Surtain have experience playing cornerback in the NFL, but he was also a high school quarterback. This gives him personal knowledge of what it takes to lead a successful offense.

With previous experience with all the players, Surtain will attempt to continue the trend of success for American Heritage football. Focusing on knowledge of the game and a strong work ethic, Coach Surtain will step into the role as the new mentor for these young players. Starting next season, Surtain will strive for another championship as he begins to add a new chapter to the storied success of American Heritage football.

“It’s a pleasure and an honor to be the head coach of such a prestigious high school like American Heritage. I’m truly thankful for the opportunity” said Surtain.
