Student musicians serenade the crowd with holiday tunes

After only a month of rehearsal, lower and upper school musicians came together to showcase their talent in the annual winter band concert.

The program included performances by the Beginning band, JH Drumline, Concert band, SH Drumline, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz band, Symphonic band, Wind Ensemble and JH Saxophone choir. Among the student musicians who performed Wednesday, Dec. 9 was Camryn Hatch, a senior band member and one of two musicians in the nation selected to perform in the Army All-American Band.  A select few talented musicians even appeared in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band last Thanksgiving, and many band members are currently involved in the all-county and all-state bands.

Malcolm Major, a parent band representative, said, “They each did great tonight. From having watched their first performance you can see the evolution, and it’s happened over such a short period of time. It’s amazing to have watched them turn into what they are now.”

Several bands played classic holiday tunes including the famed Charlie Brown piece by the Vince Guaraldi Trio, “Christmas Time is Here.” The show concluded with the wind ensemble playing a moving piece titled, “Journey to the Lion’s Castle” by Galante.

“Band is really tough, but it’s also really fun,” said junior Travis Waters, a member of the wind and percussion ensemble. “We are a family. If one person is having troubles then we are all having troubles. We all put in a lot of work for this concert. I’m really proud of how the performance came out.”

The band has two upcoming service projects. The first of which is set to take place Friday, Dec. 11 in Orlando, Fla. as part of the Give Kids the World Village, which the band has raised over $3,000 for. On Sunday, Dec. 13 the band will play for Schott Communities, a non-profit organization benefiting the deaf and disabled in Cooper City, Fla.
