Thirty-one student athletes sat on the theater stage in front of parents, fellow students and faculty, proud to wear the colors of the colleges and universities they had recently committed to. National Signing Day, Feb. 4, is the culmination of an entire high school career for many athletes, when they formally announce what college team they will play for after graduating.
“You never finish representing American Heritage because you’re always part of our family,” Athletic Director Ms. Karen Stearns said, opening the event after the drumline and cheerleaders performed. Ms. Stearns also thanked the parents and coaches for supporting these students in such an important decision.
The students were called up by sport with their parents and coaches, where they signed their National Letters of Intent and then posed for pictures.
Quarterback Torrance Gibson revealed that he would stay true to his commitment and sign with Ohio State University. Ten other athletes signed for football, two with Ivy Leagues and six with division one programs.
Julia Kingsley, who committed to New York University for soccer, said, “Signing day is a really big deal. We’ve looked up to all the girls signing for four years. It’s great to start the next chapter of my life.”
