Welcome, Mr. Wood

This year, the American Heritage campus welcomed new biology teacher Mr. Casey Wood to the Upper School science department. Mr. Wood is a native Floridian, born and raised in the state’s capital, Tallahassee. He played basketball in middle and high school and dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player.

Mr. Wood attended the University of Florida for his undergraduate and Florida State University for his graduate degree earning degrees in both English and Biology. Prior to joining us at Heritage, Mr. Wood was a ghost writer, an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), an actor, a political investigative journalist and has served as a tutor for English, history and biology. He also tutored underprivileged children in a program called Science Students Together Reaching Instructional Diversity & Excellence (SSTRIDE). When he has a little free time, Mr. Wood’s hobbies include working out and reading. He is currently teaching himself guitar and Swahili.

Mr. Wood decided to teach at American Heritage so that he could be closer to his parents who live in Fort Lauderdale. He teaches 9th and 10th college prep Biology.  “Biology is one of the most important subjects for people to learn because it applies to their own lives,” Mr. Wood said.

Wanting his students to do well in class, he hopes to show them the importance of getting a continual education. Most importantly, he wants everyone to understand that “education continues even past schooling.”

Alyssa Herzbrun, a senior at American Heritage, is in her third year of newspaper. She currently edits the opinion section of the newspaper and is a Co-Assistant Editor-in-Chief. On the weekends, Alyssa loves to volunteer at places like Broward Outreach Center, Ronald McDonald House and Feeding South Florida. Alyssa is an avid reader. Over the summer she read a book every day but school is interfering with her reading streak. She also loves to clog (not the toilet but the dance). Alyssa is looking for a great year and hopes to meet many opinionated people.
