“Checking In,” brought laughs and shocks during its recent performances, with audience members almost falling over at most showings in a scene where a character drops her husband’s urn.
The small and intimate black box comedy, which had it’s last showing Friday, follows the story of a bellhop, played by senior Matthew Squeri and a maid, played by junior Liv Cassano, at a luxury hotel with a secret love interest for each other. It describes how they go from room to room every day to help new, stranger and more interesting guests, many times ending up in different kinds of absurd situations from pregnant mothers to trouble with children.
The play, directed by Mr. Brett Scott in his fifth year at Heritage, featured many new actors. Senior Javier Malo-Fasani, in his first Heritage show, grabbed the audience’s attention with his loud, assertive roles as the main backpacker and a crazy hotel masseuse.
Later this semester in November, the show will go to the Florida Thespian district competitions, where a condensed, 45-minute version of the play will compete against other plays from the district with only one winner.
“Checking In” was performed Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4.
