The varsity girls volleyball team defeated the Hialeah Gardens Gladiators 3-0 (25-23, 25-20 and 28-26) in a match dedicated to raising attention and money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Junior Lyla Pack led the Patriots with 13 kills, sophomore Carly Tabony had 21 digs and junior Vanessa Camacho contributed four serving aces.

“We all already are a really motivated bunch, and what really motivated all of us is the fact that there is competition and support for each other as we play,” senior Veronica Perez said.

However, this game was about more than just volleyball. It was a moment of unity for players, parents and coaches alike as it was dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness month.

“It’s a really important cause for a lot of teams and families, just to come out, both teams came together to support this big cause since so many women experience this,” coach German Garcia said. “Being diagnosed earlier with breast cancer, anything we can do to help those going through it and donate the money to the foundation is meaningful.”

The team sold more than 200 tickets, eclipsing its goal of 150, increasing the donation to the Pink Angels of Memorial Hospital Foundation to $2,500. In America, one in eight women develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.

As the season progresses, the girls celebrated their senior nights Oct. 7 and continue on.
