English department decked out with new desks

Gone are the days of little elbow room and permanent back-ache. The English department is glad to announce the introduction of brand new desks in its classrooms in the 9000. These state-of-the-art desks feature wheels on the front legs, flexible seats with back rests, and larger baskets beneath the seats—perfect for storing valuable belongings or resting tired feet on.

Acquiring such high-end desks was no easy task. According to the English department co-chair, Mrs. Maryanne Hurtado, “These desks had to be unbreakable. We went through dozens of different types of desk prototypes to find the ones that were sturdy enough.” It was imperative to have desks sturdy enough to accommodate a wide range of students while also being easy to manipulate around the class. The department decided on desks with wheels, keeping in mind that English teachers often engage classes through the implementation of collaborative work.

Mrs. Hurtado added, “They are hard to move unless you pick up the back to move them. At first when I said, ‘Oh, the desks have wheels on them,’ people said, ‘Oh no, wheels on desks—that’s dangerous.’ But the wheels are only on the front. Once you put your weight into the seat, they don’t move.”

Students aren’t the only ones getting treated to new equipment this year. Teachers and administrators who frequent the teacher’s lounge in the 9000 building will be glad to discover several new, multicolored chairs.

The new desks should improve comfort which will, in turn, improve concentration through long hours of seated work, making English that much more enjoyable.
