For the second year in a row, Heritage crushed the annual Brain Bee competition at Nova Southeastern University with five students winning top awards.

Students first engaged in a written test round in which the top 16 scorers moved on to the oral competition. In the oral round, students answered neuroscience- and psychology-based questions in a “spelling bee” format so that a participant who answers incorrectly can be eliminated if someone after them answers the same question correctly.

Along with the oral round, students presented their research project boards that were each centered on neurology or psychology for NSU professors from Psychology, Pharmacology, and Cellular biology departments to evaluate.

Students also had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities such as holding lamb brains, reading brain waves and contracting muscles with a battery-driven stimulator.

The day wrapped up with five Heritage students bringing home top cash prizes.

Oral competition winners:

1st place – Rithvik Marri, 11 ($300)

2nd place – Samuil Petrov, 10 ($200)

3rd place – Rajam Arunprakash, 10 ($100)

Research poster winners:

1st place – Lauren Wong, 11 ($300)

2nd place – Likhitha Selvan, 10 ($200)

This is Lauren’s second year on the staff. She enjoys playing Papa’s Sushiria, taking naps and writing whatever’s on her mind. She’s excited to make this year the best one yet and have an awesome entertainment section.
