Junior Arisa Porter used an orange marker to draw a penguin on hot pink construction paper for Key Club’s Letters for Kindness event Friday the 3rd, where students made cards to cheer up seniors. “I think this is really important, because … people forget that there’s so many people looking out for them,” she said. Members of Key Club and Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society gathered in the Upper School Media Center Oct. 3 to create cards to improve the days of elderly residents at the Glades West Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.

Students used vivid markers, heart and star-shaped stickers and colorful construction paper to design letters to brighten residents’ days. If they were a part of Key Club, they could receive a service hour if they wrote two letters, or if they were a part of Rho Khappa, they could receive an honor society point.

“We wanted to make their days a bit better, because we know they’re going through a tough time and they might not get a lot of contact from family members, so we just wanted to bring a little happiness in their lives by writing these letters for them,” Key Club co-president Alice Wu said.

“Seniors at times can feel lonely, either family works or some don’t have family,” West Glades activity director Nina Moya said, demonstrating the significance of the event.

Junior Daniel Benitez Fuentes, middle, felt that the event was for a good cause. “I think it’s for us to feel a personal connection with them,” he said. (Justin Loriga, left, and John Krawczyk, right) (Photo/Alex Ngo)
