Ninjineers kickstart preparations for this year’s robotics competition

Over a period of just three short days, with some help, the Heritage robotics team built a functioning prototype for their upcoming FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) event.

The annual FRC is a huge event for the Ninjineers, Heritage’s robotics team. This year, the season kicked off (literally—the event is called the kickoff) Saturday, Jan. 10. Every kickoff event the robotics team assembles to watch the official FRC livestream and patiently wait for the yearly game to be revealed.

From the day of the kickoff to Monday, Jan. 12, robotics team members worked hard for hours to develop a prototype with the assistance of Heritage robotics alumni. They assembled subsystems, coded functionality, connected wires and finally took the prototype for a test drive over the three-day event, dubbed Robot In 3 Days (RI3D).
However, their work isn’t done just yet.

“There’s a couple major things the team is gonna need to work out, one of the main things being the climb,” alumni Quentin Laidler said. “I think the start that the alumnis have helped give the team is very good, and I think they’ll be able to compete down the line.”

“It’s always very daunting when the people that were teaching you leave, and so since we had an opportunity to warm ourselves up again, now we can hit the ground running,” mechanical director senior Veronica Perez said.
