Bald-dazzled: Math teacher makes lasting memories

In room 25-308, one will typically find Mr. Alen Vartan and his sixth-period students discussing statistics. However, on a recent Monday, something else besides conversations was sparkling.

“He lost a push-up contest to me,” senior Luken Aldezabal said, “and since I won, we did it.”

“It,” in this case, was bedazzling their math teacher’s head. Dedicated members of Mr. Vartan’s sixth period class brought in a bedazzle kit to cover his follically challenged head in rhinestones.

“Imagine a barbershop with six barbers just going to town on your head. They had a lot of surface area, I guess,” Mr. Vartan said.

The students themselves had a simpler reason: “He was bald, and so naturally the first thing we thought of was how to cover it,” Aldezabal said.

According to the class, there was one glaring issue: how to pick their design.

“It was sort of a collective freestyle effort of all our personalities. We all made it our own, so it’s a reflection of each of us,” senior Calliope Cuomo said.

Cuomo was the mastermind behind the plan, along with her friend senior Aniya Melian.

“We brought the materials, we got it all together, because we’ve had this plan since the beginning of the year,” Cuomo said.

The end result was a beautiful mosaic of plastic rhinestones, plastered on the statistics teacher’s bald head.

As for how the teacher planned to get the jewels off his head? No clear answer.

“We haven’t thought that far ahead yet. I was caught by surprise,” Mr. Vartan said.

The impromptu arts and crafts session may just be a funny moment for some, but for the seniors, it will stay a lasting memory.

“I will definitely remember this for a while,” senior Ash Felix said.
