Communiteens is currently having a stuffed animal drive for a local organization called Stuffed Animals for Emergencies, or SAFE. The stuffed animals collected by the Communiteens school club will go to the local South Florida chapter of Communiteens, who will then send the stuffed animals to Romania where they will be given to children in need. The drive began in early September and ran through Oct. 19.
Senior Jared Cohen, the current president of Communiteens at Heritage, is very passionate about the work he does within the Communiteens club.
“The chapter I started began in 2015, so I could make a difference in my community with friends while giving them the opportunity to learn leadership skills. I then moved the chapter to AHS,” Cohen said.
Cohen brought the local chapter to Heritage last year, making it a club on campus. He plans many different events throughout the year. One of his favorite projects he has done with Communiteens was a party he held for foster children, which included pizza, cake and a football coach who helped the kids and the members of Comuniteens play football, as well as other sports.
“Honestly I had such a great time spending time with them and that was one of the times I made a direct connection with the people I impact,” Cohen said.
If you would like to join Communiteens, they meet alternating Mondays in room 9210 at 3:10 pm.
