In fewer than 48 hours, American Heritage seniors Sydnie Rathe, Nicholas Fonseca and Faith Ward organized a school-wide protest for gun control in response to last week’s deadly massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MSD). Every year, the state legislature of Florida gathers in Tallahassee for 60 days to deliberate bills, hold hearings and pass legislation. Three days ago, I woke up at 6:37 a.m. to get to school on time; I had to be out of the house by 6:45. In a frenzied scramble, I threw my school bag together and dismissed my mother’s usual “drive safe, I love you” with only a quick wave, assuming that she knew I loved her too, assuming I could always tell her I love her later when I get home.
