Flash Forward: Fast Fashion trends

in Opinion by

Thanks to the rise of fast fashion online stores such as Shein, “microtrends” have become a normal part of the fashion world. Whereas before, trends would often last months or years, the oversaturation of new styles every day causes these “microtrends” to last much shorter periods of time before people move on to the newest one.

Earlier this year, bootcut jeans and Lululemon athleisure were all the rage. Lululemon defined jackets, especially in the light pink color, were hugely popular with TikTok fitness influencers. And while of course, neither of these things have disappeared completely, it seems that people have moved on. Here are my predictions for the next upcoming fashion trends:

Bows:

Bows have already been a trend for a while now and unlike other microtrends, I believe they’re here to stay at least a little while longer. Stores like Hollister and Edikted seem to have bow patterns on everything from jeans, shirts, skirts, hoodies, sweatpants, and dresses. Even water bottles aren’t safe. I believe this trend will outlast many others thanks to its timeless nature. Bows have been around since the dawn of women’s fashion so why not embrace them?

City shirts:

Tight shirts with city names on them are going to be long gone. They come in different styles, the most popular one being green and yellow with the name Brazil on it. These were mainly popular thanks to Shein, but Edikted was a big culprit too. I predict them sizzling out of fashion this year simply because they are too plain. There’s a difference between being timeless and simple and these shirts are too boring for a long-term space on TikTok algorithms.

Florals:

My prediction for summer 2025 is that it will be dominated by a mix of floral and boho-chic fashion. Specifically, floral corsets and skirts. Stores like Altar’d State have been restocking especially on clothes like these. Floral dresses are likely to be a long term trend in my opinion because of their unique ability to be simultaneously casual clothes while not being seen as too sloppy like sweatpants.

Fashion trends usually repeat themselves every 20 years. Heuritech states that there are five stages to a trend:introduction, rise, peak, decline, and obsolescence. (Photo/Sadie Loughlin)
