Four Future Vets Society members had the opportunity to shadow a horse surgery Jan. 14 in the Palm Beach Equine Clinic. Senior co-president Angelina Anton, junior co-president Anneliese Hsiao, sophomore Chase Spranklin, seventh grader Ava Feldman and club advisor Mrs. Erin Abramoff participated in the unique experience.
Each student was given the opportunity to observe and learn hands-on technique by assisting in the sarcoid removal of tumors on horses.
““he most exciting part of the experience was being able to practice real surgical techniques such as maintaining a sterile environment and performing on a live patient,” Hsiao said. “I’m so glad that future FVS students will be able to take advantage of opportunities as valuable as this one.”
The club aims to get more people involved with animals and plans to schedule more veterinary shadowing. Co-presidents Angelina Anton and Anneliese Hsaio helped put the event together for those considering a future as veterinarians.
“Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and start volunteering at animal shelters or even veterinary clinics,” Anton said. “The best way to know whether you truly are interested in something is to go out and find out.”
