Laufey wishes “A Very Laufey Holiday” in her new Christmas EP

Call me crazy, but I hear sleigh bells ringing. Or is that just the smooth voice of jazz singer Laufey? In her new Christmas EP, released Nov. 1, Laufey sings five new takes on widely-known holiday songs: “Santa Baby”, “Winter Wonderland”, “Christmas Dreaming”, “The Christmas Waltz” and “Love to Keep Me Warm.”

With a jolly first track, Laufey wishes for yachts, checks, rings and “some decorations bought at Tiffany’s,” in a flirty and charismatic style. Her jazz band helps carry the light atmosphere.

Following this song, Laufey takes us on a stroll through “Winter Wonderland,” with warm notes and trumpet solos. With subtle changes to the original tune, Laufey infuses the old classic with her fresh and memorable vocals.

Laufey continues to take us down memory lane with “Christmas Dreaming,” in which she humorously sings, “[she’s] doing her Christmas dreaming a little early this year.” In her dreamy and sugary style, Laufey slows down the tempo and savors every note. Continuing the trend in “The Christmas Waltz,” Laufey includes a children’s choir towards the end of her tune to reinforce the joy of giving this Christmas season.

“Her Christmas EP was very fun, and I love how she added more elements when covering the Christmas songs. Her new songs also fit the Christmas vibe. I don’t think many artists nowadays are able to bring back the old Christmas songs, but she is able to perfectly, especially since she has a beautiful jazzy voice,” junior Nicole Noriega said.

The jazz singer leaves her audience with a soft and upbeat “Love to Keep Me Warm.” Lovely harmonies and piano melodies infuse a catchy, timeless piece of music with Laufey’s love for music and the holiday spirit.

The Christmas season is approaching as many singers release songs to infuse the impending winter months with holiday spirit. Laufey, for example, released her EP, a whole month in advance. As her previous Christmas EP only had two of the five original songs, Laufey improves her take on the old classics. (Photo/Emma Colarte Delgado)
