Mu Alpha Theta team takes the charts at February statewide competition

in News by

While competing in the February statewide competition in Tampa, Fla. hosted by King High School Feb. 1, the Mu Alpha Theta math team placed second overall, with various individual awards recognizing numerous team members.

In addition to the Team and Individual tests, open tests were also offered. Open tests are ‘open’ for any individual to compete in, regardless of their grade level or common competition topic. They take place during team rounds; therefore, team members from the divisions are exempt from them.

For these unique tests, Thetas were given the choice of taking either the “Shapes and Numbers Test” or the “Mystery Test.” The Mystery Test remained a mystery until students opened the first page of the packet. The only information that was given about the test from the administrators would be that “it would be a challenge” and “not like any test students had seen before.”

“The test was honestly very interesting,” said junior Guillermo Randall, “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have some fun taking it, there were all kinds of questions on the test, from finding a hidden message in a QR code to figuring out riddles…any small thing from one question was potentially a clue for another.”

Additionally, the “Ooo Secret” test was offered, which was another secret test, this time specifically catered towards the Mu competitors. It focused on calculus topics and “actually wasn’t a terrible test” said senior Jack Finneran.
