The National Art Honors Society members are helping the community one paint brush stroke at a time. The society is painting murals at the Sawgrass Elementary School. The murals depict several different stories such as The Giving Tree, Goodnight Moon, Stuart Little, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and even Harry Potter, as well as many other childhood classics. Around eight people at a time visit the school to paint.
The project is intended to make the library and cafeteria a bright and inviting place for the elementary school students. The existing artwork is several years old. Now because of NAHS, the elementary school campus at Sawgrass will have a fresh new look. This is an ongoing community service project by NAHS club members, using their days off to paint. These involved club members have been working on this project on teacher work days and holidays when AHS is not in session.
This painting project is well underway, but not fully complete. So far, the club has come three or four times to work on the murals. “The National Arts Society spreads art across the community and unites the schools” says Sunny Li, the society’s president. The National Art Honors Society club advisor, Mrs. Foltz, came up with the idea to help the community by updating the murals at a public school so AHS students could make a direct impact on children locally. There are a few different locations on campus where their artwork is displayed, including the library and in the cafeteria. AHS students in the NAHS are not just putting on a fresh coat of paint, they are improving the community and giving back to fellow students here in the neighboring area.
