The Switch 2 has been highly anticipated for the past few years, considering that the original Switch has been around for almost eight years now (after releasing March 3, 2017). Though Nintendo has released two additional variants of the Switch, the Lite and OLED, neither have served as proper successors to the original. However, Nintendo has finally shown off their model of the Nintendo Switch 2 in releasing a first-look trailer for the console Jan 16, 2025.
The first difference highlighted in the trailer is the different measurements of the screen. The original Switch’s screen has a length of 6.81 inches and a height of 4.01 inches, while that of the Switch 2 is roughly 7.8 inches long and 4.5 inches tall. The next major difference that appears in the trailer is the Switch 2’s inclusion of two USB-C ports, one on the top of the screen and one on the bottom. In comparison, the original Switch only has one USB-C port on the bottom of the screen. The next difference the trailer shows is the stand on the Switch 2; while the Switch has a small tab on the back of the console, the Switch 2’s stand is as wide as the screen, much like the Switch OLED.
The controllers of the Switch 2 are also adjusted from their Switch counterparts; since the size of the console’s screen has changed, the controllers follow suit. The controllers of the original Switch are 4.01 inches tall and roughly 1.3 inches wide, while those of the Switch 2 are about 4.5 inches tall and 1.6 inches wide. Most notably, the controllers have a port on their side, which plugs into the Switch 2 rather than sliding into the console the way the original controllers do.
Right above the port on each controller is a very small pair of lenses. Part of the trailer also shows these controllers sliding on their sides like computer mice. There have been rumors of the Switch 2 controllers having functionality similar to computer mice, and these lenses could very easily be a light emitter and a light sensor like those that give optical computer mice their functionality.
The dock for the Switch 2 has rounded corners on its top, unlike the rectangular shape of the original Switch’s dock. However, the trailer demonstrated that the Switch 2’s dock has the same green light that turns on while the Switch is docked and powered on (Image/Nintendo).
