Nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were announced Thursday, Jan. 23, and the winners will be announced March 2, and for movie productions such as “Emilia Perez” and “Wicked,” the news was great to hear. “Emilia Perez” stole the show with a whopping 13 nominations, setting a new record for a non-English-language film. In second place, “Wicked” and “Brutalist” tied with ten nominations. Movies such as “Anora,”  “Dune: Part Two,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys” and “The Substance” are all competing for best picture

“Wicked” co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande posted their reactions to their nominations on Instagram. Erivo felt elated and “grateful to be a part of something that makes people feel seen, grateful to have experienced a dream come true, and deeply deeply grateful for this unbelievable recognition.”  She continued with thanking the Academy and her “sister,” Grande. Grande expressed the same happiness, “I’m humbled and deeply honored to be in such brilliant company and sharing this with tiny Ari who sat and studied Judy Garland singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”… I’m so proud of you, tiny,” Grande said. Director Jon M. Chu also received his thanks but was noticeably missing from the Best Director category.

Representing “The Brutalist” as Best Actor nominee, “Thank you to all my peers and colleagues at the Academy for this extraordinary honor. For almost four decades, I’ve experienced the peaks and valleys of being an artist,” Brody said. Another  Best Actor nominee is Colman Domingo, who is featured in the movie “Sing Sing.” He makes history as the first Black back-to-back Best Actor Oscar nominee since Denzel Washington. “2nd time around. Grateful about it all,” Domingo said. For “Emilia Pérez,” Zoe Saldaña is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. “I am thrilled to be among such talented company.
