After competing in the school science fair, the top 25 science researchers moved on to the Broward County Science Fair. Hosted throughout the months of January and February, the fair concluded Feb. 8 with award notifications sent out Feb. 11. There were two phases that 15 high schoolers and 10 middle schoolers had to complete.
First, students had to complete the virtual phase of the fair. Over 100 students from around Broward County, in both high school and middle school, participated in the first round. The county fair directors then selected the top 30 middle and high school students from phase one to compete in the second round held in person at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) in Fort Lauderdale.
Of the 25 original AHS students competing in phase one, 11 high school and 8 middle school students qualified for the second round. Of these students, 7 high school and 6 middle school students will be advancing to the state competition in April. Broward fair advisor Brian Welch briefs the middle school cohort over the procedures of the fair before judges come out. “I loved going to County, because it was a very exciting experience,” seventh grader Ella Colarte Delgado said. “I really enjoyed presenting to the judges, especially since I was able to share my project that could impact millions of people.” (Photo/Marisol Delgado)
