Summer break is almost here which means the end of English classes and mandatory assigned books. While more reading may be the last thing on some people’s minds, choosing the right book can make it a fun and entertaining way to enjoy the break.
- Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus:
- Part romance and part historical fiction, this book tackles serious topics like sexism and death while keeping an upbeat and humorous tone. The main character, Elizabeth Zott, is a brilliant chemist in the 1960s. Unfortunately, she faces many challenges in her career and everyday life because of the rampant misogyny of the time. Throughout the book she finds love, becomes a famous chef and matures as she learns to deal with complex emotions.
- Circe by Madeline Miller:
- Circe, the protagonist, is an enchantress from Greek mythology who has been banished to a small, secluded island. Covering all the events of her life, the book describes everything from her birth as a goddess all the way to her encounters with Odysseus and Athena. Miller’s story of magic and love shows how Circe slowly develops strength, independence and confidence as she overcomes challenges and learns to confront the guilt caused by her past actions.
- The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern:
- An enchanting tale of magic and romance, the Night Circus follows two magicians named Marco and Celia who have been forced into a competition of their skills. They compete in a unique, magical circus that travels around the world. As both characters compete against one another, the mystery of the circus begins to unfold and love blooms. The elaborate descriptions are incredibly immersive and the web of fun, complex characters make this book a very entertaining read.
