UH, Actually:  Behind the mask of HorsegiirL

in Opinion/UH Actually.... by

Over the years, many artists have made their claim to fame with an animal brand. I didn’t bat an eye when I saw Taylor Swift promoting the snake imagery of her “Reputation” album or Melanie Martinez being famously associated with rabbits. These were all normal, and I embraced animal imagery as part of the music scene.

That all changed when I first laid my eyes upon the anomaly that is HorsegiirL.

HorsegiirL is not your everyday artist. She is a Berlin based singer and DJ who never appears in public without a large brown horse mask. When asked her name, she gives the answer “Stella Stallion” and fully insists that she is a half-horse, half human person.  She is famous for her techno-hits such as “My Barn My Rules” and “Material Hor$e.” The most interesting thing about her to me is that nobody seems to be batting an eye.

I understand why HorsegiirL appears with a mask on: she wants to protect her privacy outside of the whole half-horse persona, even if she doesn’t outwardly say it. What boggles me is that we seem to pick apart every little detail about human celebrities, but when a half-horse comes along and says she’s from Sunshine Farms and was discovered by someone named Whitney Horseton, we don’t care half as much as we do when Chappell Roan says she doesn’t want to be a parent or if Selena Gomez got proposed to over Taco Bell. Why do we seem to pick mainstream celebrities apart while we regard this horse-woman as just one of us?

HorsegiirL is meant to represent fun, freedom and “letting your mane down” Glamcult writer Tiffany Lai said. I think the reason most people don’t immediately attack her is because of the values she stands for and how she’s not typically considered mainstream. It’s her nicheness that allows her to find her true fanbase, and as she’s on the rise to popularity, she maintains the values that set her on this road in the first place. From Sunshine Farms to the main stage, even if the horse mask kind of frightens me, HorsegiirL seems to be taking the world by storm.
