When I first moved to Florida from Connecticut three years ago, I had major culture shock. The weather, the people and the Publix. However, the thing I had to get used to the most was definitely the uniforms. I had to get used to wearing the same thing every day and find different ways to express myself. While it was definitely a challenge, I am proud to say I have succeeded in finding ways to let myself shine through the uniform.
When asked how people express themselves through their uniforms, responses are always varied. I prefer to express myself through my nails, activities, and jewelry, while others prefer to show themselves through their hair and shoes. Every holiday season, I go to Claire’s or Spirit Halloween and buy a pack of themed earrings on sale, so I can express my individuality and creativity every holiday.
Hobbies like theater are another way for people to see the real me. I’ve always loved performing, and joining activities like the choir or productions inside and outside of school. Showing your passion is a great way to show people who you are and make new friends.
Another way I like to express myself is through my nails. I coordinate my nail colors with the season, and always try to do a fun design. Bright neons, dotted, and seasonal motifs such as leaves or flowers are some of my favorites, because they allow me to show my true colors through my nail colors.
However, on a different note, freshman Jacob Mendelson said his favorite way to express his style is a bit different. “Honestly it’s more personality. I’ll wear my chain every day just for fun, but I like to express myself through my humor and personality. I love to talk to people or at least laugh with them for a bit, even if it’s someone I barely talk to.”
Eighth grader Madeline Zhuravel brings up an excellent point, as she said, “I express myself with my jewelry, shoes and overall demeanor.” I couldn’t agree more with this statement. While I love expressing myself physically, emotionally works just as well. One resolution I set for myself last year was to compliment one person every day, and it’s one of my favorite things about myself. I pride myself on trying to be a good human being every day, and being the person to compliment someone on their self expression shows my personality in a way that I’m proud of.
While you can express yourself through your hair or jewelry, activities or shoes, personality seems to be a major theme across the board. From being funny to being nice, being you seems to be the best way to make a lasting impression in people’s minds.
Christmas is one of the best times of self expression for me, as there are unlimited opportunities for me to show myself through fun jewelry. I got these candy cane earrings two years ago at Target, and I still get compliments on them to this day. (Photo/Ruby Hedge)
