Walking for the animals

In the Humane Society of Broward County’s biggest fundraiser of the year, people and dogs walked one mile around the Intercoastal Promenade Park in Las Olas for the 35th annual VCA Walk For The Animals Saturday, Feb. 1.

“We are currently at 99% of our goal and the donations are still trickling in… We have $517,175 of our $518,000 goal. I know it will happen,” Linda Sanders, the director of volunteer services, said.

Although registration was free, the organization encouraged attendees to fundraise by providing prizes for reaching certain fundraising goals, including free parking at Beach Place on walk day for raising $1000, a hat for raising $500 and various other prizes such as a Walk shirt for raising $100.

Along with individual fundraising, those who registered were able to form packs, which is a team to fundraise with. Heritage’s Future Vet Society (FVS) was able to collectively raise $1,286.50 across eight students. “I loved to see all the different dogs and everyone getting together to support such a great cause,” senior FVS co-president Sydney Burke said.

The event included a DJ playing music, sponsor booths with dog-related goods, an online auction, a kids zone and a pet boutique, which entertained attendees throughout the event.
