Netflix kicked off the first month of the new year with a lot of additions and new seasons of beloved shows. To make up for the loss of content because of new streaming platforms like Disney+, Netflix creates and adds to new shows constantly. Here are five trending shows to stream, if you haven’t already.
“You”
This thriller TV series centers around a bookstore manager and his struggle for love. The recent addition of a new second season gives viewers a deeper look at the protagonist, Joe Goldberg, and his heightened crushes that turn into something more sinister. Focusing on many modern aspects, like the effects of social media and its dangerous vulnerability, gives viewers a new perspective on everyday life through the eyes of a stalker, with in-depth psychology lessons woven into 45-minute episodes. This must-watch leaves viewers sitting at the edge of their seats, desperate to know what happens next.
“The Good Place”
Even though it doesn’t top the trending list, season four’s upcoming arrival should definitely catch your attention. The show’s alternate version of afterlife doesn’t resemble the typical Christian Heaven and Hell idea. “The Good Place” features main character, Eleanor Shellstrop, finding herself in the afterlife and in relief that she made it into the Good Place. It doesn’t take Eleanor long to realize they made a mistake with her placing and she doesn’t actually belong there. The show follows her struggle with partner Chidi and neighbors Tahani and Jason. As the plot develops, Eleanor comes to change her old ways and wants to better herself in this afterlife. This alternate universe idea will capture the attention of open-minded viewers who enjoy sitcoms with mixes of reality and fantasy.
“Money Heist” or “Casa de Papel”
This Spanish series also recently gained a new season. With the help of a criminal mastermind who goes by “The Professor,” a group of robbers train to pull off the biggest bank heist in history. The twist? Eight people will rob the Royal Mint of Spain–by printing their own money. With hostages and negotiations with authorities, the group of robbers stay one step ahead using guidance from the “The Professor.” With the option for English subtitles, this drama series quenches all need for action and suspense.
“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”
As a spinoff on the original “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” tale, this horror-filled coming-of-age drama lines up with the original plot. The protagonist, Sabrina Spellman, struggles with embracing her half-witch half-mortal identity, all while fighting off everyday evil forces, including her very own family. The newly added third season stirred up quite the attention with actor Kiernan Shpika’s titular role on the show.
“The Circle”
If the 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t astonish, the reality show’s description of being “unlike any other reality show on TV” by the Insider should sound convincing. In “The Circle,”comedian and show host Michelle Buteau features players moving into the same apartment building. The fact that none of them have met face-to-face, and they each live in separate apartments gives this program its twist. A specifically designed social media platform features each player making a profile to portray themselves however they want. The game’s goal revolves around needing good ratings to advance, with the lowest rated players at risk of elimination. $100,000 creates quite the incentive to win and makes for a great and entertaining season.
