The 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards ceremony celebrated the iconic female stars in the music industry. Held March 6 in the Youtube Theater of Los Angeles and hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross, an American actress, the show featured singer Karol G as the Woman of the Year. Karol G, a Colombian pop artist, made her breakthrough after collaborating with rapper Bad Bunny, and is the first Latin woman to receive this award.

Korean pop group NewJeans was also honored at the show, receiving the Group of the Year award. The group performed their tracks “Super Shy” and “ETA” at the event. Other performances included Charli XCX (Powerhouse Award), who performed an unreleased song of hers, Nigerian R&B artist Tems (Breakthrough Award), who performed her song “Not an Angel” and American artist Victoria Monét (Rising Star Award), who delivered her hit single “On My Mama” coupled with a surprise appearance from her mother.

Other notable award-receivers were Latin-pop artist Young Miko (Impact Award), pop singer Kylie Minogue (Icon Award), country singer/songwriter Maren Morris (Visionary Award), hip-hop artist Ice Spice (Hitmaker Award) and Brazillian singer/songwriter Luísa Sonza (Global Force). While the curtains closed on this year’s event, the full show can still be seen, as it was recorded and is available to watch on Billboard’s website.

Before her speech, Karol G performed her reggaetón hit “Amargura.” Aside from being the first Latin woman to receive the Woman of the Year award, her album “Mañana Será Bonito” became the first Spanish album to reach number one on the Billboard 200.
Following her performance, Tems accepted the Breakthrough Award and recognized all of the “amazing women” standing alongside her. She dedicated the award to the first woman in her life, her mother. She stated how she honored and appreciated the way her mother chose her name, which is an untraditional action, as the role is typically saved for the father. Tems also emphasized the need for women to support one another and uplift those around you.
