As many students return to school, they start to build connections with their teachers and a love for the subjects they are exploring. Heritage’s curriculum offers everything from core classes in a variety of levels to pre-professional tracks in business, medicine, engineering, art and music.
One particular class that many students grew to love English.
“I love getting to know my teachers and learning about different ways of writing. I always end up making the most and best friends out of them. I keep an open mind and participate the most in that class,” junior Sophie Masel said.
Some have found a love for the critical thinking skills the class builds, as well as the close relationships students form with their teachers.
“I love the discussions we have in groups, and I love that Ms. (Laci) Cedeño works hard to keep our class thinking,” junior Elizabeth Perez said.
In Mrs. Bolanos’s English class, her energy has played a vital part in a student’s enjoyment of her class.
“Mrs. Bolanos’s AP English Language class is my favorite. Her lessons are always engaging and enriching, even on the syllabus day. Her energy charges me up for the rest of my day,” junior Meng Lin said.
As for another perspective, a portion of the student body is involved in STEM-related fields and activities.
“My favorite class is AP Environmental Science because I love science and the fact the Mrs. Uttke is an upbeat teacher that encourages group work and hands-on learning,” senior Ayanna Clarke said.
Students in more creative fields may look forward to their art classes.
“My favorite class is my Drawing 2 class. It’s been so much fun learning composition and proportions with art,” sophomore Camila Galindo said.
All in all, as students return back to a regular schedule full of learning, many discover their interests for subjects. Whether it’s dependent on teaching style, character, difficulty or the fact that a student’s friends are in the class, many find their place at Heritage.
The art studio, filled with student creativity, is where advanced art classes take place. Art teacher and portfolio coach Ms. Andrea Preston leads everything from Drawing Honors to AP Studio Art with juniors and seniors. “My teacher and my friends make it all the better in that class,” Galindo said.
