*This article has spoilers for the new “Devil Wears Prada 2” movie*
As an avid fan of “The Devil Wears Prada” franchise, this second film was one of the most incredible cinematic experiences I’ve ever seen.
Director David Frenkel returns to lead the film alongside the iconic cast Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly; Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs; Stanley Tucci as Nigel; Emily Blunt as Emily; and Tracie Thomas as Lily. After its release Friday, May 1, it dominated the weekend box office, grossing an estimated $234 million.
I do not believe this movie functions as a sequel. It feels more like its own standalone story entirely.
The amount of plot twists, laughs, tears, and jaw-dropping moments while watching were too many to count. It began with Andy Sachs, the journalist who used to work for Miranda Priestly at Runway magazine, getting fired from her job as a reporter now in search of a new job. Priestly in the meantime is the editor-in-chief of Runway and is supposed to be promoted to global editor of content until she finds out she said some controversial things regarding fast fashion. This led to Sachs and her crossing paths again and Sachs getting the features editor job at Runway.
Later on, the Runway team—Andy, Nigel and Miranda—are in Italy celebrating the magazine. During this time, Irv Ravits, the chairman of Eliass-Clark who publishes Runway, played by Tibor Feldman, passes away. This was devastating news to the fashion industry, and more to me and that’s when my biggest jaw drop happened because the new question raised—who would fund and help Runway?
The answer was none other than Ravits’s son, Jay Ravits, who doesn’t know a single thing about fashion. This new partnership between Jay and Miranda causes tension for the magazine and its staff. Furthermore, Emily—played by Emily Blunt—betrays Andy and Miranda by attempting to buy out Jay and Runway so she can get revenge and be the owner. Then, another plot twist, Andy and Miranda use their connections to settle for an even greater offer than what Emily could do, so now Runway is in the safe hands of Miranda.
Learning that Emily, who used to be one of Miranda’s assistants with Andy back in the first movie, had ulterior motives to get back at them was genuinely shocking. While she may have felt overshadowed in the past by Andy and was probably jealous of her and her success, getting back at them by using your filthy rich boyfriend was very much not the move.
Furthermore, this film proves to continue the timelessness of the franchise because of its uniqueness and construction of the plot that doesn’t make it seem too much of a continuation and copy of the first, rather its own standalone just with the same characters.
This movie forever changed me and I will proceed to see it in theaters 10 more times until I can find it online to watch at home another 100 times. I give it a 10/10.
