Summer is a great time for fun with friends and family. However, it is also a great opportunity to rack up on service hours. Service hours are essential, as they not only give back to the community, but also are needed to graduate and meet the requirements for different societies within the school, such as National Honor Society (NHS). Here are four service opportunities for this summer:
Do The Dunes Cleanup Competiton:
This service opportunity takes place June 8 from 5 p.m. -8 p.m. at 9301 Collins Avenue, Surfside. The event is an opportunity to help clean up the Surfside dunes while also getting educated about the marine life in the area. Not only does this provide you with service opportunities, but also with prizes. The first place team winner gets three mountain bikes, the second place team winner wins 3 snorkeling kits, and the third place team is awarded 3 $50 Amazon gift cards. The rules of the competition are that teams of three try to pick up as much trash as possible in an hour, so be sure to bring two friends along.
Play It Forward:
This non-profit partners with libraries in South Florida to distribute toys to underprivileged children, in order to make playtime accessible to all children and reduce toy waste. Volunteers are needed to help with toy distributions and donations. You can help out at the Main library, 101 West Flagler St. Miami, FL 33130.
Parkinson’s Foundation:
This foundation works as a group to make life better for those suffering with Parkinson disease. This disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and parts of the body controlled by the nerves. The organization has many opportunities to help the organization and cause. You can join their team which works to help find a cure for the disease. You can also become an ambassador and help raise awareness of the cause. Along with this you can volunteer for local events when they come up and even reach out and host your own fundraiser.
Animal Lovers Rescue Inc:
This organization in Miami works to save animals from emergency situations and provide them with proper healthcare. You can check its website to find different opportunities to help out animals. There are many options from animal socials to volunteering.
Helping dogs in need is a great way to not only receive hours, but also give back to the community. “I love helping out animals at the Animal Lover rescue. I have been to a few animal socials near me and they are so much fun and so touching. I get to socialize and play with puppies while also learning their stories, which is always a blast. I usually bring my friends along with me as it’s a great experience to share,” freshman Alyana Daya said. (Photo/Wikimedia Commons)
