Who will claim the Song of the Summer?

in Entertainment by

As the sun grows hotter and the weeks go on, people turn to music to capture the spirit of their summer. A “Song of the Summer” is not a new concept; in 2017, “Despacito,” with Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber dominated the charts. Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’s “Old Town Road” broke records in 2019, while Harry Styles took over in 2022 with his hit single “As it Was.” Here are a few songs from this summer that have the potential to become the next summer song.

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire”

After a two-year hiatus from music, the singer released her first song since her debut album, SOUR. “Driver’s License” dominated the 2021 charts as her lead single, and people wondered if her new single “Vampire” from her new album, GUTS,  will be able to top that legacy. “Vampire” is a striking comeback that compares a toxic relationship to a vampire, draining and manipulating in the name of love.

“Vampire” is a pop-rock anthem that combines infectious melodies with Rodrigo’s signature vulnerable lyricism. Her haunting vocals, powerful delivery combined with an intensifying bridge allows her listeners to feel the pain embedded in the song. GUTS comes out September 8.

Taylor Swift Speaks Now (Taylor’s Version)

Taylor Swift has been dominating the music industry in the past few months. Following her announcement of the recording of her album “Speak Now,” she also announced she would be re-releasing her song “Cruel Summer” as a single. She also released a remix of her song “August” for the trailer of the show “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” all while traveling around the country for her “Eras” tour.

Taylor Swift plans to re-release her 2010 junior album “Speak Now” July 7. After losing the master rights to her first six albums in a record deal, Swift decided to take matters into her own hands and re-record her music to finally own the rights to her labels. She will also release eight never–before-heard “vault tracks” that were cut off the album before its original release.

Aside from “Speak Now,” her song “Cruel Summer” has been trending on the Billboard Hot 100 for the past few weeks, and due to her fans’ devotion to the song, Swift decided to finally release it as a single. Music videos speculations have surfaced as well, and with enough promotion, this 2019 song could very well become the new song of the summer

Rock the Barbie Soundtrack

There are so many possible summer songs found on the Barbie movie soundtrack, which has been one of the most highly anticipated  movies this summer. From Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” to “Barbie World” with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, the star-studded soundtrack has countless songs with potential to be a summer hit.

“Dance the Night” is an infectious pop tune with a nostalgic carefree vibe. The lightheartedness of the song, as well as the catchy tune and playful lyrics, are sure to keep crowds dancing all night long.

Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice once again collaborate on a new song, “Barbie World.” A spin-off of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl,” this fierce and dynamic song adds much needed energy and power to the soundtrack. With this power duo collaborating once again, Nicki and Ice bring bold lines and powerful deliveries sure to leave listeners exhilarated.
