Despite the warm temperatures and skyscraping humidity of South Florida, the Heritage ice hockey team is s(NO)w joke. The team brought their skills Sunday, Dec. 11 to the Panthers Ice Den to play the Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) Eagles. After a riveting match, Heritage emerged victorious and added another win, heading into the next week with a 8-3 win under their belts.

Possession was inconsistent during the first half of the first period. While Heritage took some unsuccessful shots on goal, the Eagles fought back with their own offensive takes. Goalie Justin Zucker made a key save in the first five minutes. A few moments later, MSD started on a breakaway, but sophomore Sean Murphy raced back to stop the charge. Halfway through the first period, Boca-Delray campus’ Matias Roy “broke the ice” by scoring Heritage’s first goal. 

From there, the goals kept coming. Sophomore Alex Brennan scored the second goal, and sophomore Ben Siefert scored the third. Roy ended the game with a hat trick, and strong defense and goaltending kept the goal differential down for a five-goal win.

Today’s win was a team win due to the hustle from all players. “We were working together really well and outplayed the team (MSD) today,” junior ice hockey player Nathan Debs said.

This is the second time the Heritage ice hockey team has played Stoneman Douglas this month, and both times they have secured a win. These two teams face off again Monday, Dec. 19 at Panthers Ice Den, and hopefully will result in another Heritage victory. As the saying goes, the third time’s the charm.
