The American Heritage varsity hockey team made their season debut against Calvary Christian Academy Monday, Oct. 7. Facing off at the Florida Panthers Ice Den in Coral Springs, Fla., the team kicked off their season as high school principal Mrs. Elise Blum dropped the puck at 5:45 p.m.

Taking an early lead, Calvary Christian was able to put the puck in the net first. Continuing to dominate, Calvary was able to hold the lead all of the game. The Patriots were unable to come back from the deficit and lost the season opener 8-2.

Scoring for Heritage was sophomore defender Alexander Saviskas on an early wrist shot assisted by senior defender Scotty Herman. With an early goal giving the team hope, Heritage looked to gain momentum and turn the game around. However, the only other goal Heritage scored for the rest of the game was by freshman forward Michael McCoy on an unassisted breakaway.

Even though the team does not have any games scheduled in the near future, the team still looks to improve after this loss. “We’re definitely gonna work a lot harder in practice, study game tapes when we can and do anything really to build chemistry,” junior forward Gianna Clemente said. “We’ve got a talented group of kids; it’s just a matter of us working together.”
