Heritage hosts their first ever HOSA Regionals

in News by

For the first time ever, Heritage hosted the Sunrise Regional Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competition— a competition that ranges from regionals to internationals which tests various skills in the medical field. The competition was bigger than ever as 19 different schools participated and 198 Heritage students competed. Dr. Diana Sood and Mrs. Paula Urrea stepped us as regional advisors and led the way.

The competition began at 9 a.m. sharp. Those who passed round 1 weeks earlier with online tests, started as round two competitors performing their practicals such as conducting  CPR on a plastic dummy, solving a crime scene or taking the tympanic (ear) temperature of a volunteer patient. Other students  presented speeches or skits on medical topics and others were interviewed.

Students chose from the four different food trucks offered — Burger Food Truck, Sabor a México, 3 Island G’s and BrunosEats365 — after their hard work as health professionals. Then, around 1:30 p.m. competitors met in the theater to participate in raffles and Jeopardy.

After a long day, the winners were revealed at 3 p.m. in the theater. Heritage pulled off a huge and 88% of Heritage competitors will be moving on to states. Those that placed in the top three spots received a medal and a guaranteed spot to States, fourth and fifth place winners received ribbons and a spot as an alternative to compete at States if any of the top three isn’t able to go.
